Fifth game.

Judging by what was seen and heard of the English, the general opinion was that they were not as strong as the other years. Above all, it seemed to me that bowling was easier, something which Mr Webber fully agreed with, and so it was thought that the H.C.C., who brought a good team into the field, would not be too sad against them.

Friday, however, seems to be a bad day to play against the English, because according to Mr Webber's testimony, the match, which was usually postponed because of rain, had the peculiarity of falling on that very day.

Early in the morning, men dressed in richly upholstered coats were seen glancing skyward, seriously begging for help. But in vain. It did not take long for the rain to fall with streams and one could have played a water ballet on the Mould Course rather than a cricket match. At last it finished a little, and in order not to lose any time, lunch was first offered by H. C. C. to the Englishmen, eaten, and then played for up to 5 or 5 1/2 hours. Mr. v. Stolk used this opportunity to address a few words to the Englishmen to which Mr. Webber, who is otherwise not a lover, replied "to stand on his legs":

He had noted with great pleasure that the Dutch had benefited greatly from the good lessons of Bentley; above all, this was noticeably in the debate. In the first year he had not yet noticed this, but there was still so much to be learned before one could learn the other; but now that this had happened he had observed rapid progress, and he had also learned that he would have to bring a stronger team with him in the years to come.

In the meantime it had cleared up so much that one could start, and after Mr Webber had lost the toss (which did not go very solemnly), Hoeffelman and Bourlier went to the wickets, while the bowling was in the hands of Mr Doyle and Mr Mariette.

Bourlier was soon bowled by a yorker of Mr. Doyle and Mr. Eyken appearing at the wicket. The 2nd wicket costs more and falls on 16. Posthuma, who now arrives, is beautifully dumped by the wicketkeeper, and this is the beginning of the terrible collapse that followed. Eijken was caught by Mr Richmond after an excellent 12, and successively the wickets of v. Oosterzee, v. Haeften and the rest fall. It was a rather sad sight to see people, who could do much better, going out in such a way. However, the wicket was very difficult to play and entirely in favour of the bowler, but the collapse of the Hague team has not yet been explained. The score, which was 3 for 20, will be 10 for 30.

After this, under a continuous downpour, the gentlemen Rich. mouth and Neilson go to bat. The first played almost everything to leg and, after scoring 7 runs, is bowled by Mullemeister. Lords Sharman and Neilson soon exceed the total of H. C. C. and when the score stands at 36, both lords are still at the wicket, on which Mr. Webber proposes to stop playing, which, I believe, seemed to be to the taste of the fielders.

Mr Neilson was not out with 25 runs, including a wonderful square-strike of 5 He was caught at the wicket once, but the umpire decided otherwise. By the way, this was the only mistake in his innings.

Umpires were Mr Murray and alternately one of the other players. Mr. P. Romeijn had had the kindness to award a bat to the batsman of H.C.C., who played best, and without the slightest conscience it could be awarded to Mr. A. Eijken.

Vijfde wedstrijd.

's Morgens vroeg zag men al mannen, gestoken in rijk gestoffeerde jassen, ernstig smeekende blikken hemelwaarts richten. Doch tevergeefs.
