Second Match.
The Rambling Brittons would play the second game of their tour at the Maliebaan in The Hague against Olympia. The pitch was mowed and rolled and looked pretty good. While playing, however, it turned out that appearances were deceiving: some balls jumped up formidably, which was not suitable to put the ball man at ease.
The match was played 11 against 11. Mr. Sharman did not take part and let Mr. Webber take his place.
Olympia missed Isbrücker but had its regular team, Olympia had decided, despite the fact that there were only two bowlers, not to include players who did not belong to the club and not to care at all about what other clubs wished to do or refrain from doing in this respect.

The fielder found it difficult to get to the ball and one of his colleagues got in the way. Lamb is the first, who doesn't make anything and the score would have been under 60 if it wasn't for Webber and Herbert setting up a small score for the last wicket. With the score at 67, Webber is bowled by de Groot.
De Groot had bowled very well and his analysis of 7 w. for 21 runs may not be slightly improved by another Hollandschen bowler in this series of games. V. d. Bosch took 3 for 37, which is mainly due to the fact that his balls did not jump as unevenly as those of the Great.
After the players had reinforced themselves in the traditional way in the tent, Olympia went on to bat. If the other players had followed the example that the first two batsmen, W. Coops and de Groot, gave them, the score could have been much higher than it was. De Groot made a square-strike of 2 and a good hit to leg for 3. Hatt and Mariette bowled not effortlessly but cleanly, and when the first wicket fell, the others took little effort. V. d. Bosch made, as usual, a couple of big hits, including a great fire column from 3 to squareleg. The ball rose well above the trees. The tail behaved as usually tails used to do in the old days. The runs were scarce and the innings, which looked so good, closed for only 33 runs.
The second innings of the Brittons are opened by Doyle and Harrison, who score 8 runs in short time, including a hard square leg by the latter; after which it is neatly caught by Hartzfeld on mid-on. Richmond takes his place and gives the wicket an easy chance before scoring. The score rises steadily. Doyle hits hard and sure, in the beginning everything to long-off and third man, later only to the laying side. Richmond plays very carefully and makes almost nothing but singles in the panties and to cover point. When Bosch and de Groot fail to separate, the bowling is changed, and successively Leembruggen, W. Coops and Hartzfeld try their luck, but without success. Richmond plays calmly and uses oak shives ball to score. For Doyle this is not a requirement, and when successively the legguards are put down, as it has become oppressively hot due to the approaching thunderstorm, is a maiden over a white raven. The game of the batsmen has of course become less correct, but to an even greater extent it has suffered fiels; chances are missed at the wicket on third man and slip, and even the point is "quite asleep" on his dangerous place. The sky is getting more and more menacing and when the first drops start to fall, Doyle has completed his magnificent innings. Mr. Webber waited to close the innings until one of the batsmen had scored 50 runs, but with the score at 81 and of which he has 46 runs of his own, Doyle hits generously over a half-shooter of the Great, tumbling his midstump.
Mr. Webber closes the innings of the Rambling Brittons and wants to return Olympia, but the weather prevents this, and after another quarter of an hour of watching the ever-stronger crashing rain, the game is given up, so that Olympia loses on the first innings with 34 runs.
De Groot played the best innings for Olympia. Mariette did this for the Rambling Brittons in their first innings. In the second, Doyle's game wasn't as nice as Richmond's game. The former often walked ahead and then cut the ball away. The fielding of Olympia was good in the first innings, but decreased in the second, impressed by the danger, the fact that the match was lost and the oppressive heat. The fielding of the Brittons was pretty good, catches were not missed, but the fielders were often grabbing the ball in the long grass, which will not surprise anyone. Harrison kept very well; the condition of the ground could not lead him to go further behind the wicket.
Mr. Posthuma was the only "snappy" umpire; on the other hand one of the English players took turns.

Tweede wedstrijd.
De Rambling Brittons zouden den tweeden wedstrijd van hun tour op de Maliebaan te 's Hage tegen Olympia spelen. De pitch was gemaaid en gerold en zag er dan ook nogal goed uit. Bij het spelen bleek evenwel dat de schijn bedriegt: sommige ballen sprongen geducht op, wat niet geschikt was om de balsmen erg op hun gemak te stellen.
De wedstrijd werd 11 tegen 11 gespeeld. De heer Sharman deed thans niet mede en liet zijn plaats door den heer Webber innemen.
Olympia miste Isbrücker doch beschikte overigens over haar gewone elftal, Olympia had besloten om, niettegenstaande het feit dat er maar twee bowlers waren, geen spelers die niet tot de club behoorden mede te laten doen, en er zich volstrekt niet om te bekommeren, wat andere clubs in dit opzicht wenschten te doen of te laten.
Faramor houdt bij het tossen de eer van Nederland hoog en verslaat den Brit bij het kruis of munt. Hij koos eerst fielden, zonder zoo pessimistisch te wezen om te denken dat hij wellicht geen innings zou krijgen, indien hij ze niet dadelijk nam.
De heeren Halt en Richmond openen de innings der Brittons, terwijl Olympia natuurlijk de eenige bowlers van reputatie in haar midden, nl. v. d. Bosch en de Groot, aan het werk zet. De batsmen spelen in het eerst zeer voorzichtig, doch weldra losser. Er zijn dan ook reeds 15 punten gemaakt als het eerste wicket valt door een misslag van Hatt, welke heer 13 van de 15 runs voor zijne rekening had genomen.
Harrison begint op vrij ongewone manier; nl. met een geweldigen legslag op V. d. Bosch, waar. 6 op werden geloopen. De bal rolde ver door op den weg die langs de Maliebaan loopt. Harrison wil echter wat al te veel slaan en valt dan ook kort daarop als slachtoffer van een shooter van de Groot. Van Richmond komt Olympia vrij goedkoop af. V. d. Bosch bowlde hem met een fraaien shooter met off-effect, waar de batsman een cut op scheen te willen maken. Doyle's verblijf aan het wicket is ook niet lang, want na een single en een geweldige cut van 3 gemaakt te hebben, wordt hij ook door de Groot gebowld. Mariette en Neilson bieden wat langer weerstand aan het bowlen. Laatstgenoemde speelde nog al in de lucht naar den off kant en werd daar eens door cover point gemist. Mariette speelde netjes doch uiterst voorzichtig. Hij besloot zijn score met een geduchten legslag op een full pitch van de Groot, waarna v. d. Bosch met een fraaien bal zijn legstump nam. Daarna vallen er eenige wickets in snelle opvolging, Neilson wordt gebowld, Thomas op "third man" genomen en Murray fraai gevangen op slip door Genet. De fielder kon moeilijk bij den bal komen en werd door een van zijn collega's in den weg geloopen. Lamb is de eerste, die niets maakt en de score zou onder de 60 zijn gebleven, indien niet Webber en Herbert een kleinen stand voor het laatste wicket op touw hadden gezet. Met de score op 67 wordt Webber gebowld door de Groot.
De Groot had zeer goed gebowld en zijne analyse van 7 w. voor 21 runs zal misschien niet licht door een anderen Ilollandschen bowler in deze reeks wedstrijden verbeterd worden. V. d. Bosch nam er 3 voor 37, wat voornamelijk hieraan is toe te schrijven, dat zijne ballen niet zoo ongelijkmatig sprongen als die van de Groot.
Nadat de spelers zich op traditioneele wijze in het tentje hadden versterkt, toog Olympia aan bat. Indien de overige spelers het goede voorbeeld hadden gevolgd dat de eerste twee batsmen, W. Coops en de Groot, hun gaven, dan had de score heel wat grooter kunnen worden dan het geval was. De Groot maakte een squarelegslag van 2 en een goede klap naar leg voor 3. Hatt en Mariette bowlden niet moeielijk doch zuiver, en toen het eerste wicket was gevallen kostten de overigen weinig moeite. V. d. Bosch maakte, zooals gewoonlijk, een paar flinke slagen, waaronder een geweldige vuurzuil van 3 naar sqiiareleg. De bal steeg een heel eind boven de boomen. De staart gedroeg zooals meestal staarten in vroeger tijd plachten te doen. De runs waren schaarsch en de innings, die zich zoo goed liet aanzien, sloot voor slechts 33 runs.
De tweede innings van de Brittons wordt geopend door Doyle en Harrison, die in korten tijd 8 punten scoren, waaronder een harde sqare legslag van laatstgenoemde; waarna deze netjes door Hartzfeld op mid-on wordt gevangen. Richmond neemt zijn plaats in en geeft vóór hij gaat scoren een gemakkelijke kans aan het wicket. De score rijst gestadig. Doyle slaat hard en zeker, in den beginne alles naar long-off en third man, later alleen naar den legkant. Richmond speelt zeer voorzichtig en maakt bijna niets dan singles in de slips en naar coverpoint. Daar v. d. Bosch, en de Groot er,niet in slagen een scheiding tot stand te brengen, wordt het bowlen veranderd, en achtereenvolgens beproeven Leembruggen, W. Coops en Hartzfeld hun geluk, doch zonder succes. Richmond speelt kalm en benut eiken scheven bal om te scoren. Voor Doyle is dit geen vereischte, en als achtereenvolgens de legguards worden afgelegd, daar het drukkend heet is geworden door de naderende onweersbui, is een maiden over een witte raaf. Het spel der batslieden is natuurlijk minder correct geworden, doch in nog grootere mate heeft het fielden geleden; kansen worden gemist aan het wicket op third man en slip, en zelfs de point is op zijne gevaarlijke plaats "quite asleep". De lucht wordt steeds dreigender en als de eerste druppels beginnen te vallen, heeft Doyle zijn prachtige innings voltooid. Mr. Webber wachtte met het sluiten der innings tot een der batsmen 50 runs zou hebben gescoord, doch met de score op 81 en waarvan hij zelf 46 runs heeft, slaat Doyle royaal over een half-shooter van de Groot, die zijn midstump doet tuimelen.
Mr. Webber sluit de innings der Rambling Brittons en wil Olympia weer inzenden, doch het weder voorkomt dit, en na nog eenkwartier naar den steeds harder neerplassende regen te hebben zitten kijken, wordt het spel opgegeven, zoodat Olympia verloor op de eerste innings met 34 runs.
De Groot speelde de beste innings voor Olympia. Mariette deed dit voor de Rambling Brittons in hunne eerste innings. In de tweede was het spel van Doyle niet zoo mooi als dat van Richmond. Eerst-genoemde liep dikwijls vooruit en maaide dan den bal weg. Het fielden van Olympia was goed in de eerste innings, doch verminderde in de tweede onder den indruk van den vervaarlijken stand, het feit dat de match verloren was en de drukkende hitte. Het fielden der Brittons was vrij goed, catches werden niet gemist, doch de fielders stonden dikwijls in het lange gras naar den bal te grabbelen, wat niemand verwonderen zal. Harrison keepte zeer goed; de toestand van den grond kon hem er niet toe brengen om verder achter het wicket te gaan staan.
De heer Posthuma was de eenige "svaste" umpire; aan den anderen kant deed beurtelings een der Engelsche spelers dienst.
