A dinner in honour of the centenary of Edgar Allan Poe was given by the Authors' Club in the Hotel Metropole on Monday night with [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]] in the chair. Mr. Whitelaw Reid, the American ambassador, made a capital speech. Captain Poe, the senior representative of the family from which Poe was descended, was also present. The figures, from left to right, are : Mr. Whitelaw Reid, [[Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]], Mrs. Humphry Ward, and Captain Poe.
