United Services v. Free Foresters

The Evening News (Portsmouth) (22 august 1890, p. 3)

The concluling play in this match yesterday, at the United Service Cricket Club Ground, Portsmouth, was most exciting. The Foresters, who had totalled 116 over night, went on with their first innings, but their tail end fell off similarly to that of their opponents, the last three wickets producing but seven runs. The result was that on the first innings the home team were left in the majority by eight runs. The second innings of the U.S. left the other side 159 to win, and though at the outset it looked rather hopeless for the F.F., they took advantage of the extra quarter of an hour at their disposal, scored very rapidly, and secured the necessary number of runs five minutes before the time fordrawing the stumps. The band of the Royal Marine Artillery furnished the music of the afternoon on the ground. The score of the match was as follows:—
