Fictional characters.
In the Sherlock Holmes stories
The Beddingtons were two brothers in The Stockbroker's Clerk :
Beddington (elder)
- The elder Beddington was a "famous forger and cracksman" (burglar) released from five years in prison (STOC 456).
- He was the criminal who impersonated Hall Pycroft at Mawson & Williams in London (STOC 456). He used the position to study the safes and strong room, make lock mouldings, and prepare for the robbery. He murdered the watchman and attempted to escape with securities worth around £100,000 (STOC 464).
- He was caught in the act by Sergeant Tuson and Constable Pollock (STOC 463).
The character is not met by others, his actions are reported in the newspaper Sherlock Holmes read (STOC 452).
Beddington (younger)
alias Arthur Pinner / Harry Pinner.
- The younger Beddington was the so-called "managing director" of the fake Franco-Midland Hardware Company (STOC 366).
- His job was to lure the real Hall Pycroft away from London so he couldn't discover his identity was being used (STOC 413).
- He posed as Arthur Pinner in London to recruit Hall Pycroft (STOC 103). He then changed his appearance (shaves beard, changes hair) to pose as Harry Pinner in Birmingham, pretending to be Arthur's brother (STOC 270). He kept Hall Pycroft busy compiling trade lists to prevent him from going back to London (STOC 240).
- Hall Pycroft spotted the same gold-stuffed tooth in "both Pinners," revealing it was actually the same man (STOC 265).
- When he learnt from the newspaper that his brother (the elder Beddington) has been caught, he tried to hang himself in his Birmingham office but was saved by Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson (STOC 366).
