In the Sherlock Holmes stories

Mary Morstan was the client of Sherlock Holmes in The Sign of Four (SIGN, 195).

  • She was born in 1861, as she was seventeen when she came to Edinburgh in 1878 (SIGN, 228).
  • When seated at breakfast at his house, Watson and his wife (Mary Morstan), received a telegram from Sherlock Holmes (BOSC, 1).
  • Watson rushed upstairs (of his house) to explain the matter to his wife (Mary Morstan) and joined Sherlock Holmes upon the doorstep (STOC, 58).
  • She probably died (unknown cause) between 1891 and 1894, as Watson was in bereavement in 1894 (EMPT, 188).
