* He was a young London solicitor, junior partner of ''Graham & McFarlane'', of 426 Gresham Buildings, EC ([[NORW]] {{refcanon|NORW|72}}).

* He was flaxen-haired and handsome in a washed-out, negative fashion, with frightened blue eyes and a clean-shaven face, with a weak, sensitive mouth ([[NORW]] {{refcanon|NORW|56}}).

* He was falsely accused of the murder of [[Jonas Oldacre]] and arrested by [[Lestrade|Inspector Lestrade]] ([[NORW]] {{refcanon|NORW|93}}), but was exonerated by [[Sherlock Holmes]] ([[NORW]] {{refcanon|NORW|495}}).
