In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- John Hector McFarlane was the son of Mr. McFarlane and Mrs. McFarlane (NORW 239), living at Torrington Lodge, Blackheath (NORW 83).
- He was a young London solicitor, junior partner of Graham & McFarlane, of 426 Gresham Buildings, EC (NORW 72).
- He was flaxen-haired and handsome in a washed-out, negative fashion, with frightened blue eyes and a clean-shaven face, with a weak, sensitive mouth (NORW 56).
- He was falsely accused of the murder of Jonas Oldacre and arrested by Inspector Lestrade (NORW 93), but was exonerated by Sherlock Holmes (NORW 495).
