- On 10 march 1883, Colonel Elias Openshaw received a letter from India, with a Pondicherry post-mark, and containing 5 dried orange pips (FIVE 432, 81).

- On 2 may 1883, Colonel Elias Openshaw is found dead (FIVE 123).
