In 1895, Major-General John Cecil Russell took the lease of Bramford Hall in Suffolk from the Lorraine family. He is described as Maj. Gen. J. C. Russell (C.V.O.) late 12th Lancers, formerly of 30 Queen's Gate Terrace, London.

This photograph, which is one of a series of seven held by the Suffolk Record Office, is believed to show Conan Doyle with Maj. Gen. Russell and his wife, presumably at a time when Conan Doyle was invited for a shooting weekend.

We are grateful to The Archivist of Suffolk County Council for kind permission to reproduce the photograph, which was taken by the notable Ipswich photographer William Vick.
