Buddha

Religious figure.

Siddhartha Gautama, most commonly referred to as the Buddha (lit. 'the awakened one'), was a wandering ascetic and religious teacher who lived in South Asia during the 6th or 5th century BC and founded Buddhism.


In the Sherlock Holmes stories

The Sign of Four (1890)

  • The thick and broad hasp of the Agra treasure chest wrought in the image of a sitting Buddha (SIGN 2270).

The Veiled Lodger (1927)

  • Sherlock Holmes sat upon the floor like some strange Buddha, with crossed legs, the huge books all round him, and one open upon his knees (VEIL 77).
