• Cecil James Barker was John Douglas's friend from his earlier life, and a frequent visitor at Birlstone Manor (VALL 506).

• He first met John Douglas in California, where they became partners in a mining claim at a place called Benito Canyon (VALL 1036)

• On the night of the murder, Barker was the man who raises the alarm at the Manor House (VALL 519)
