  • Colonel Hayter knew Dr. Watson from Afghanistan, where Hayter had been under Watson's professional care (REIG 10).
  • His household was a bachelor establishment (no wife, no children), which helped convince Sherlock Holmes to accept the invitation to stay there for rest (REIG 12).
  • He was hospitable, good-natured, and respects Sherlock Holmes's abilities — though he was an amused onlooker to the investigation (REIG 11).
