- He lived in the countryside near Reigate, Surrey (REIG 10). His home was the base from which Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson operated during the case (REIG 12).
- His household was a bachelor establishment (no wife, no children), which helped convince Sherlock Holmes to accept the invitation to stay there for rest (REIG 12).
- He was hospitable, good-natured, and respects Sherlock Holmes's abilities — though he was an amused onlooker to the investigation (REIG 11).
