It was a Scottish Professor who gave Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose sixty-seventh birthday this is, the idea of the cleverest detective in fiction. This was Dr. James Bell, under whom the novelist-to-be studied medicine at Edinburgh. Bell was a great exponent of the art of observation. "You are a soldier, and and have served in Bermuda as a non-commissioned officer," he once observed to a patient, who admitted the correctness of the statement.
