In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Culverton Smith was the planter turned self-taught "expert" in an Asiatic disease from Sumatra who murdered his nephew Victor Savage and attempted to murder Sherlock Holmes using a spring-loaded ivory box that draws infected blood (DYIN 190 212).
- He bore a grudge against Sherlock Holmes over the Savage case (DYIN 212).
- He tacitly admitted the murder method during his visit at Baker Street (DYIN 444), and was arrested when Inspector Morton arrived (DYIN 485).
- He was small, frail, with a rickety frame and great yellow face, bald head with a smoking-cap (DYIN 268).
