In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • Culverton Smith was the planter turned self-taught "expert" in an Asiatic disease from Sumatra who murdered his nephew Victor Savage and attempted to murder Sherlock Holmes using a spring-loaded ivory box that draws infected blood (DYIN 190 212).
  • He lived at 13 Lower Burke Street and has a butler, Staples (DYIN 253).
  • He was small, frail, with a rickety frame and great yellow face, bald head with a smoking-cap (DYIN 268).
