Helpers of the Enemy

SUBSCRIBERS TO DISTRESS FUND FOR GERMANS.
The smashing of the windows of Councillor Midgley's house by townspeople of Saffron Walden, as reported in yesterday's "Daily Express," because he was harbouring two Germans, has had an interesting sequel.
Councillor Midgley told a "Daily Express" representative yesterday that the responsibility for his action in giving refuge to two alien enemies rested with the "Emergency Committee for the Assistance of Germans, Austrians, and Hungarians in Distress" — the precious organisation whose efforts to help the country's enemies were exposed in the "Daily Express" borne weeks ago.
Mr. Midgley wrote to the committee offering hospitality to any foreigners who might need it, and the committee allocated to him Mr. and Mrs. Huisen, an elderly German and his wife, neither of whom were naturalised.
The councillor spoke of the desirability of exhibiting "the spirit of true chivalry in time of conflict," and presented the "Daily Express" representative with an interesting booklet, in which are set forth the unpatriotic aims of the emergency committee.
He also produced a list of those who have subscribed money for the comforting of the nation's enemies. The committee's first appeal brought in more than £1,900.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Carnegie, of course, head the list with £200, and Sir James Reckitt has been touched to the amount of £100. Other gifts are:—
