In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • Hilton Cubitt was a Norfolk squire from an old English family that has lived at Ridling Thorpe Manor for five centuries (DANC 63).
  • He was tall, ruddy, clean-shaven, and straightforward in manner, he embodies the honest, honourable country gentleman (DANC 40).
  • He married Elsie Patrick, an American woman with a troubled past she refuses to speak about (DANC 65).
  • When strange "dancing men" figures started appearing around his estate, frightening his wife, he sought Sherlock Holmes's help (DANC 36).
  • Before Sherlock Holmes could solve the case, Hilton Cubitt is shot dead during a confrontation with Abe Slaney, the previous fiancé from Elsie's past (DANC 251).
  • It is later determined that Hilton Cubitt fired first, which spared Abe Slaney from the death penalty (DANC 604).
