  • Hilton Soames was the tutor and lecturer in Greek at the college of St. Luke's (3STU 7), and one of the examiners of the Fortescue Scholarship (3STU 21).
  • He was a tall, spare man, of a nervous and excitable temperament (3STU 8).
  • He asked Sherlock Holmes to investigate the problem of the examination papers that have been disturbed on his desk, to check whether there has been any cheating (3STU 69).
