Interview of Adrian Conan Doyle, the third child of Arthur Conan Doyle on the French Television (ORTF) aired on 15 june 1966.

Interviewed by Pierre Dumayet, Adrian Conan Doyle explains the rules of gentleman taught to him by his father, illustrated with an anecdote.

• Pierre Dumayet : Vous dîtes volontiers que votre père était un chevalier du moyen-âge.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : Certainement, il avait le caractère d'un chevalier du moyen-âge. par exemple, quand j'étais un garçon de 15 ans, vous savez, il m'appelle à son bureau et il me dit : "Mon fils, il y a trois régulations pour gentilhomme..."

• Pierre Dumayet : Trois règles oui.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : Oui exactement, excusez mon mauvais français. Il n'est pas question de richesse, il n'est pas question de train de vie. Il est question de trois choses. Première, son attitude d'honneur envers les femmes. Deuxième, son attitude de probité dans les choses financial...

• Pierre Dumayet : Financières, oui.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : Financières, exactement. Et troisième, son attitude de courtesy, de chivalry à les serviteurs et tous les peuples plus bas de lui.

• Pierre Dumayet : Des inférieurs.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : Si vous passez les trois tests, vous êtes un gentilhomme. Si vous passez pas, vous êtes rien. Par exemple, je vais vous donner un bon exemple. Quand j'étais en Egypte avec lui dans le train à Port Said, nous avons rencontré le même jour une femme, une femme anglaise, un peu laide, vous savez.

• Pierre Dumayet : Un peu laide, oui.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : Oui, exactement laide. Et je dis à mon père, cette femme était vraiment laide. J'étais très fort comme ça, jeune homme. Il me donnait claque-claque comme ça, vous savez. Quand j'ai recouvert mon sens, j'ai dit, pourquoi vous avez fait ça? Il me dit, "mon cher fils, la femme laide, il existe pas dans tout le monde. Il est seulement une question de femmes, toutes les femmes, avec la beauté, mais les femmes peut-être plus beautées que les autres, plus jolies que les autres. C'est tout.

• Pierre Dumayet : You often say that your father was a knight of the Middle Ages.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : Financial matters, exactly. And third, his attitude of courtesy, of chivalry towards servants and all people below him.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : If you pass the three tests, you are a gentleman. If you do not pass them, you are nothing. For example, I will give you a good example. When I was in Egypt with him, on the train to Port Said, we met that same day a woman, an Englishwoman, rather ugly, you know.

• Pierre Dumayet : Rather ugly, yes.

• Adrian Conan Doyle : Yes, exactly, ugly. And I said to my father, that woman was really ugly. I was very blunt like that, as a young man. He gave me slap-slap like that, you know. When I had recovered my senses, I said, "why did you do that?" He said to me, "My dear son, the ugly woman does not exist anywhere in the world. It is only a question of women, all women, with beauty, but some women perhaps more beautiful than others, prettier than others. That is all."
