Jack Croker

From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia
Jack Croker hitting Sir Eustace Brackenstall (The San Francisco Call, 21 may 1905)

Fictional character.

In the Sherlock Holmes stories

He was misspelled "Crocker" in the US Doubleday editions...

  • Jack Croker was the first officer on the "Rock of Gibraltar" (ABBE 527), and was promoted captain of the "Bass Rock" (ABBE 415).
  • He was a very tall young man, golden-moustached, blue-eyed, with a skin which had been burned by tropical suns, and a springy step which showed that the huge frame was as active as it was strong (ABBE 494). He was reliable on duty, but a wild, desperate fellow off the deck of his ship, hot-headed, excitable, but loyal, honest, and kind-hearted (ABBE 420).
  • He met Mary Fraser (future Lady Brackenstall) on the "Rock of Gibraltar" and fell in love with her (ABBE 528).
  • After Mary's marriage with Sir Eustace Brackenstall, Croker killed her abusive husband in a fair fight, and — hot-headed yet kind-hearted — helped stage a burglary to shield her (ABBE 559).
