• He was Ettie Shafter's father (VALL 2146).

• He was a heavy, elderly man (VALL 2150).

• He took John McMurdo in as a lodger, for seven dollars a week, paid in advance (VALL 2156), but later rejected McMurdo because of the criminal life (VALL 3252).

• He was the witness of his daughter Ettie Shafter's marriage with Jack McMurdo (VALL 4048).
