In the Sherlock Holmes stories

Sherlock Holmes' client.
- He heard from Major Prendergast how Sherlock Holmes saved him in the Tankerville Club Scandal (FIVE 42).
- He is the son of Joseph Openshaw and nephew of Colonel Elias Openshaw (FIVE 62).
- Colonel Elias Openshaw took a fancy to him (FIVE 74).
- In 1878, Colonel Elias Openshaw asked to his brother Joseph Openshaw to let John live with him. When he was sober he used to be fond of playing backgammon and draughts with John (FIVE 75).
- Colonel Elias Openshaw would make John his representative both with the servants and with the tradespeople, so that by the time that he was sixteen he was quite master of the house (FIVE 77).
- He was found drown dead near the Waterloo Bridge (FIVE 383).
