In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- John Turner was an Australian bushranger known as "Black Jack of Ballarat" of the Ballarat Gang (BOSC 564).
- When he settled in England, he was blackmailed by Charles McCarthy, and killed him when McCarthy asked him to marry his daughter Alice Turner to McCarthy's son (BOSC 606).
