In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • He was plump, ruddy-cheeked, cheerful, and boyish in manner (NAVA 67).
  • He seized the chance to steal the treaty when Percy Phelps left the Foreign Office room, and hid it under a floorboard in Percy's bedroom (NAVA 824).
  • For nine weeks, he couldn't retrieve it because Percy is always guarded (NAVA 830).
  • Later, disguised with a cloak, he attempted to break into the room at night to recover the hidden treaty, but Sherlock Holmes caught him (NAVA 791).
  • He had lost heavily dabbling in stocks and hoped to sell the treaty to a foreign power (NAVA 814).
