- Major Murphy was an officer in the Royal Mallows regiment and a colleague of Colonel James Barclay (CROO 88).
- Sherlock Holmes owed most of his initial facts about the Barclays to Major Murphy (CROO 75).
- Murphy described Colonel James Barclay's military career, personality, and marriage, including the Colonel's occasional gloom and superstition (CROO 87).
- At the end of the story, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson met Major Murphy in Aldershot just after the inquest, and he told them the verdict, Colonel James Barclay's died from apoplexy (CROO 382).
