• Mercer was the second mate of the Gloria Scott (GLOR 312).

• He was one of the conspirators in Jack Prendergast's planned mutiny (GLOR 312).

The Creeping Man (1923)

• Mercer was a member of Sherlock Holmes's Baker Street Irregulars — the street urchins Holmes occasionally employs to gather information (CREE 388).

• Mercer was Sherlock Holmes's general utility man who looks up routine business (CREE 390). He provided Holmes with observations about unusual happenings around Professor Presbury's house (CREE 391).
