In the Sherlock Holmes stories

Real name : Evans.

  • He was a convict on the "Gloria Scott", imprisoned for forgery. He was the cell neighbor to James Armitage during the voyage. They both participated to the mutiny (GLOR 320).
  • Opposed to Prendergast's plan to murder the remaining loyal officers and crew, he left the "Gloria Scott" with Armitage and six others in a small boat before the ship exploded (GLOR 356).
  • Rescued by the brig Hotspur and taken to Australia. Changed his name to Beddoes. Made money in the goldfields and returned to England as a wealthy man (GLOR 382).
  • He became the second target of Hudson's blackmail after Hudson left Armitage's house (GLOR 389).
  • He sent the coded warning letter to Armitage ("The game is up...") that triggered the Trevor senior's fatal shock (GLOR 244).
