In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • Mr. Tangey was the commissionaire at the Foreign Office (NAVA 299).
  • He was an old soldier, reportedly of the Coldstream Guards (NAVA 321).
  • On the night of the theft, Percy Phelps found him asleep in his lodge, with the kettle boiling over (NAVA 147).
  • He was bewildered when the bell from Percy Phelps's office rang, since Phelps himself was with him at the time (NAVA 148).
  • He was shadowed by Scotland Yard after the theft, but no evidence was found against him (NAVA 440).
