Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who celebrated his sixty-second birthday yesterday, is a modest man, but he may justly assume that his first schoolmaster was given to under-statement. When Sir Arthur was leaving school this pessimist called him into the presence and remarked: "Doyle, I have known you now for seven years, and I know you thoroughly. I have to tell you that you will never come to any good." Far more helpful was a later teacher, Dr. James Bell [1], under whom Doyle studied medicine at Edinburgh, and from whom, I believe, he derived the inspiration of Sherlock Holmes.
