In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Patrick Cairns was a harpooner who came to Baker Street as a job applicant (one of the three men Sherlock Holmes summoned as Captain Basil) (BLAC 429). The other harpooners were James Lancaster and Hugh Pattins.
- He directly witnessed Peter Carey kill J. H. Neligan on the Sea Unicorn (BLAC 492).
- He came to blackmail ("squeeze") Peter Carey for hush money over the crime and the tin box (BLAC 498), but he killed Peter Carey in self-defense with a harpoon when Carey attacked with a knife (BLAC 475).
