- Peter Steiler was the landlord of the Englischer Hof (an inn in Meiringen), where Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson stayed (FINA 326).
- He was an intelligent man who speaks excellent English because he had worked for three years as a waiter at the Grosvenor Hotel in London (FINA 327).
