- He was a bulky, sunburned, bearded former suitor of Lady Frances Carfax who made his fortune at Barberton (South Africa) (LADY 147).
- He tracked Lady Frances Carfax across Europe, consulted Sherlock Holmes, tailed Mrs. Peters from the pawnbroker to 36 Poultney Square, and helped stop the sham funeral (LADY 225).
