Pilot (Watson TV episode)
| S01E02 Redcoat >> |

This pilot is the 1st episode in season 1 of the American TV series Watson aired on 26 january 2025 on CBS. 43 min.
Reichenbach Falls, Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty plunge into the water mid-fight and Watson dives in after them—only to later wake in a Swiss hospital as the sole reported survivor, informed by Shinwell Johnson that Holmes has left him a fortune to start a clinic. Six months later, Watson has honoured that wish by founding "The Holmes Clinic for Diagnostic Medicine" in Pittsburgh and assembling a team of brilliant but difficult specialists. Their first major case is Erika Filipello, a pregnant woman apparently dying of fatal insomnia, brought in by Watson's estranged wife and hospital administrator Dr. Mary Morstan. Watson suspects a misdiagnosis and clashes with Mary over how far he can bend medical ethics to keep Erika calm and hopeful. The team eventually discovers that Erika suffers from a biotinidase deficiency and that her similarly sick "cousin" Autumn is actually her half-sister, a revelation that both explains their genetics and allows effective treatment. In the closing twist, Shinwell meets a man who is revealed to be Moriarty, alive. Shinwell gives him some medical samples in a black wallet while Moriarty threatens him that he is watching "always and everywhere."
References to the original Sherlock Holmes stories
- In the opening scene, Watson assists to the fall of Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty in the Reichenbach Falls. In the original story "The Final Problem", Watson is not there as he is tricked away by a fake note and only returns after the struggle and fall.
- "James Moriarty" : Professor James Moriarty was the arch-enemy of Sherlock Holmes (The Final Problem, 1893).
- "Shinwell Johnson" : He was a former criminal allied to Sherlock Holmes to provide information from among the underworld. He appeared only in this story (The Illustrious Client, 1924).
- "Baker Street apartment" : 221B Baker Street is the Sherlock Holmes' address (A Study in Scarlet, 1887).
- "John Hamish Watson" : The H. of "John H. Watson" is not known. The "Hamish" suggestion comes from author Dorothy L. Sayers who noticed that Watson's wife called him "James" in The Man with the Twisted Lip (1891), and proposed "Hamish" which is the Scottish equivalent of "James".
- "Croft twin brothers" : The brother of Sherlock Holmes was Mycroft Holmes in The Greek Interpreter (1893).
- "Dr. Mary Morstan" : Mary Morstan was the first wife of Dr. Watson but she was not a doctor (The Sign of Four).
- "Eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" : This was pronounced by Sherlock Holmes in The Sign of Four (1890).
- "When I got back from the war, I struggled" : Watson came back from Afghanistan and lead a comfortless, meaningless existence until he met Sherlock Holmes (A Study in Scarlet, 1887).
- "Gregson of Scotland Yard" : Inspector Tobias Gregson in A Study in Scarlet (1887).
- "Eureka" : Sherlock Holmes never said Eureka in the 62 original stories.
- "Tattoo examination" : Sherlock Holmes made a small study of tattoo marks, which have even contributed to the literature of the subject (The Red-Headed League, 1891).
- "The game's afoot" : "The game is afoot" in The Adventure of the Abbey Grange (1904).
- Dr. Watson's licence plate is "221B SSH" : 221B Baker Street is the Sherlock Holmes' address (A Study in Scarlet, 1887)
