PORTSMOUTH F.C. v. HAVANT F.C. — The former Club opened their season on Saturday with a match under Association rules, at Havant, when they were victorious by three goals to love. The visitors won the toss, and the home team kicked off, but the leather was soon taken into their own quarters. After several attempts, the visitors succeeded in scoring, the goal being kicked by Kindersley. Before half-time was called Williams obtained a second goal for Portsmouth, a claim for off-side being disallowed. On ends being changed, Portsmouth still had the best of the game by reason of the superior play of their forwards, and another goal was secured, one of the Havant full backs driving the ball through the posts in an attempt to take it from Davies the Portsmouth captain, who had the leather right up to the Havant goal-keeper. The game was lively throughout, but the visitors' goal, though several shots were made at it by Carrell and Dr. Strong, was only once really in danger, and then their goal-keeper adroitly relieved his side. The Portsmouth forwards deserve special mention for their individual and collective play, and for Havant Dr. Strong, Packham, Carrell, and Bone rendered conspicuous service, Packham several times preventing Portsmouth from scoring. Sides:— Portsmouth: Centre forwards, L. Pares and A. E. Kindersley ; right wing, R. E. Davies and T. Huddy ; left wing, C. E. Godfrey and J. Williams ; half-backs, P. Russell, R. Hemingsley, and F. Kent ; full-backs, A. Moore and W. Adames ; goal, A. C. Smith. Havant: Centre forwards, Dr. R. G. Strong, Vanderpant, and T. J. Vick ; right wing, A. Bone and A. Carrell ; left wing, F. Long and E. Softly ; half-backs, A. Wood and G. Westbrook; backs, W. Packham and J. Freeston ; goal, J. Agate.
