In the Sherlock Holmes stories

• Selden was known as the "Notting Hill murderer" (HOUN 1233).

• He escaped from the Princetown prison in Dartmoor, near Baskerville Hall (HOUN 1701).

• He was the younger brother of Eliza Barrymore (HOUN 2054), whom she helped during his escape (HOUN 2993).

• He was killed in the Grimpen mire by Jack Stapleton's hound (HOUN 2990).
