In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- From the bird-stuffer Sherman at 3, Pinchin Lane, Lambeth, Sherlock Holmes borrowed Toby, the scent-tracking dog, to follow the killers' trail (SIGN 1116).
- He was the only character (with Mycroft Holmes) to call Sherlock Holmes by his first name : « A friend of Mr. Sherlock is always welcome » (SIGN 1174).
