Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who has been one of the foremost of Slater's champions, said to a reporter immediately after the decision was announced:—

"I hope some good will come out of this case by its resulting in the various responsible officials, who for years have refused to do anything in the matter, being pulled up very sharply."

"IT FILLS ONE WITH HORROR."

Mr. Ramsay MacDonald made the following statement:—

"The decision is exactly what everyone who has read the latest statements made by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and others expected. Thinking over what has happened, and what might have happened, it fills one with horror. It is now clearly the duty of the Government to consider compensation, and it must be in proportion in the wrong done."
