SIR A. CONAN DOYLE ON DIVORCE.
The National Birth-rate Commission, appointed by the National Council of Public Morals, yesterday passed a resolution welcoming the introduction of the Ministry of Health Bill. In view especially of the extremely urgent problems of racial infection which am involved in demobilization, the Government was urged, after the grave delay of the past 18 months, to expedite the passage of the Bill as the necessary foundation of racial and, therefore, of all reconstruction.
SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, taking as a basis of calculation the figure of half a million separated couples, said that, as it was stated before the Divorce Commission that 50 per cent. of divorced people remarried, it was reasonable to suppose that 50 per cent. of those now separated would also remarry it facilities for divorce were obtainable, We should have, therefore, a quarter of a million remarried people, and crediting each family with an average of three, there would be an actual addition within a few years of 750,000 to the population. Thus it was no exaggeration to state that within a generation or so the ravages of the war could be made up from this source alone.
