Dr. Conan Doyle has told us that the parents of Sherlock Holmes were a contempt for the average detective of fiction, admiration for the method of Dr. Joseph Bell, the great Edinburgh surgeon, and a certain M. Dupin. He took his M.D. so long ago as 1859. [1]
