The Mystery Ship

(From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
Sir, — As one who has followed with interest the case of the Marie Celeste, may I point out the extreme improbability of the latest explanation.
In the first place it simply removes the mystery from one ship to the other. Why should a derelict be floating about with boats intact and a large sum of money on board? Secondly, why should a dozen or more rough seamen wander about the world for fifty years and never tell a story which every one wished to know, and which involved no criminal confession on their part?
Again, why should a decent captain or mates forfeit their whole career, and consent to obliterate themselves for ever, for so paltry a sum.
There are minor difficulties, but thee seem to me to be nearly insurmountable.
ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE.
Windlesham, Crowborough.
