At the Conference of Liberal Unionists, held at the Westminster Town Hall on Thursday, the 8th inst., under the presidency of the Marquis of Hartington, the Liberal Unionists of Portsmouth were represented by Dr. Conan Doyle and Messrs. John Read and W. J. Boyce, when the following address was presented to Lord Hartington:— "We, the Liberal Unionists of Portsmouth, hereby beg to express our entire confidence in the Marquis of Hartington and the other leaders of the Liberal Unionist party. We also desire to express our approval of the support given by the leaders of the party to the efforts on the part of Her Majesty's Government to suppress illegal combination in Ireland, and promise our hearty support to them in their endeavour to preserve the integrity of the Empire. — Signed, on behalf of the Liberal Unionists of Portsmouth, A. W. WHITE, Chairman of Committee ; A. CONAN DOYLE, Vice-Chairman." The same gentlemen subsequently attended the banquet in the St. Stephen's Hall. Mr. A. W. White was at the last moment unavoidably prevented from attending the conference and banquet.
