In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • Mr Victor Hatherley was a hydraulic engineer living at 16a Victoria Street (3rd floor) (ENGR 28).
  • He was approached by a mysterious man named Colonel Lysander Stark, who offered him a high-paying secret job to inspect a supposedly faulty hydraulic press in a remote countryside house in Eyford (ENGR 108).
  • When he realized that the press was not intended to be used for honest purposes, he narrowly escaped death, but his thumb was cut by Stark who pursued him (ENGR 314).
  • He told his story to Sherlock Holmes but when they returned to Eyford, the house was burning and the counterfeiters on the run (ENGR 457).
