VICTORIA THEATER, TONIGHT, WILLIAM GILLETTE.
William Gillette, in "Sherlock Holmes" will give a performance at the Victoria theater tonight. This will be Mr. Gillette's only appearance here in some time, as at the end of a short American tour he goes to England for a run in London for one year. The play ran all of last season at the Garrick theater in New York, and the production seen here will be identically the same as that seen there in every particular. In speaking of Mr. Gillette's performance in St. Louis, the Globe-Democrat, on Tuesday, January 1st, said: "There is no use arguing or trying to analyze such effect as Mr. Gillette as an author and actor has obtained in 'Sherlock Holmes.' No one in the huge audience last night was proof against the spell Mr. Gillette wrought. He simply defies criticism, and analysis. The interest aroused is most absorbing, and the play speeds on swift wing, for one entirely forgets one's surroundings."
