In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Alec Fairbairn was a sailor who first came into the Cushing-Browner circle through Sarah Cushing (CARD 436).
- He was a "dashing, swaggering chap, smart and curled" with "winning ways," and "wonderful polite ways with him for a sailor man" (CARD 421).
- He became friendly with Jim Browner's wife, Mary, often seeing her at Sarah's lodgings (CARD 421). His growing closeness to Mary fueled Browner's jealousy and rage (CARD 328).
- He was murdered by Jim Browner during a boating trip off New Brighton, struck on the head with a stick (CARD 472).
- Jim Browner cut one of his ears and sent in the salt-filled cardboard box to Cushing's house (CARD 71).
