In the Sherlock Holmes stories

  • Alec Fairbairn was a sailor who first came into the Cushing-Browner circle through Sarah Cushing (CARD 436).
  • He was a "dashing, swaggering chap, smart and curled" with "winning ways," and "wonderful polite ways with him for a sailor man" (CARD 421).
  • He was murdered by Jim Browner during a boating trip off New Brighton, struck on the head with a stick (CARD 472).
  • Jim Browner cut one of his ears and sent in the salt-filled cardboard box to Cushing's house (CARD 71).
