- Mary Cushing was the sister of Susan Cushing and Sarah Cushing (CARD 207).
- She married Jim Browner at twenty-nine (CARD 387). She had a happy marriage, but her sister Sarah Cushing's interference and Jim Browner's return to drinking strained the relationship (CARD 218).
- She spent time with Alec Fairbairn, a sailor, often at Sarah's lodgings (CARD 420).
- Mary was murdered by her husband Jim Browner in a fit of jealous rage, alongside Alec Fairbairn, while they were out rowing (CARD 466).
