In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Bannister was Hilton Soames's longtime college servant at St. Luke's (3STU 35).
- He had been the butler to old Sir Jabez Gilchrist, Gilchrist's father (3STU 518).
- So out of loyalty he quietly let Gilchrist slip from the bedroom after Hilton Soames went for help (3STU 526).
