Bob Carruthers
From The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia

Fictional character.
In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Bob Carruthers was a widower and Violet Smith's employer at Chiltern Grange, near Farnham, Surrey (SOLI 53), who secretly followed her (in disguise) to protect her (SOLI 72).
- He was once in on Jack Woodley's scheme to steal Violet's uncle's fortune (SOLI 463).
- But Carruthers fell in love with Violet, and when Woodley abducted her, he shot Woodley (non-fatally) during the rescue (SOLI 361).
- After the case, Sherlock Holmes thought that Carruthers behaviour was not viewed very gravely by the Court, and he thought that a few months were sufficient to satisfy the demands of justice (SOLI 504).
