- Jack Woodley was a brutal, heavy-faced, red-moustached young man (SOLI 360). A ruffian (SOLI 274) and an odious person (SOLI 44). Bob Carruthers depicted him as "the greatest brute and bully in South Africa" (SOLI 422).
- With Bob Carruthers they were coming back from South Africa where they met James Smith, Violet Smith's father (SOLI 38).
- He planned to steal Violet Smith's uncle's fortune by forcing a sham marriage with Williamson's help (SOLI 460).
- He was shot by Bob Carruthers (non-fatal) (SOLI 361).
