In the Sherlock Holmes stories
- Carlo was a mastiff belonging to Jephro Rucastle (COPP 346).
- It was a giant dog, as large as a calf, tawny-tinted, with hanging jowl, black muzzle, and huge projecting bones (COPP 355).
- He was shot by Dr. Watson (COPP 553) when he attacked Jephro Rucastle (COPP 552).
