Charles I (19 november 1600 - 30 january 1649) was King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 27 march 1625 until his execution in 1649.
In the Sherlock Holmes stories
A Study in Scarlet (1887)
- Charles's head was still firm on his shoulders when this little brown-backed volume (De Jure inter Gentes) was struck off (STUD 930).
The Musgrave Ritual (1893)
- When Sherlock Holmes and Reginald Musgrave open the hidden chamber beneath the cellar, they found several discs of metal that Holmes recognises as coins of Charles I (MUSG 351).
- In the Musgrave ritual, Sherlock Holmes interpreted : "Whose was it?", "His who is gone", as Charles I, executed in 1649 (MUSG 371).
The Valley of Fear (1914)
- Charles I was concealed at Birlstone Manor for several days in the course of the Civil War (VALL 1631).
